Why in news
The Indian government has reaffirmed the safety and performance of E20 petrol (20% ethanol blend) based on extensive scientific studies and field data. This comes amid media and social media concerns about potential engine issues, which have been investigated and found unsubstantiated.
Background
India's Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) program started as a pilot in 2001, with E5 introduced in 2006. Blending was around 1.53% in 2013-14 but has gradually increased through a phased, consultative process involving NITI Aayog, automakers, oil marketing companies (OMCs), ARAl, SIAM, IIP, and other technical institutes. E20 has been in use for over 2.5 years, with E15+ used for over 3.5 years.
Key facts
E20 petrol has been scientifically verified as safe for use within prescribed standards, with no significant adverse effects on engine performance, durability, or fuel efficiency.
Over 20 crore two-wheelers and 3 crore petrol cars are running on ethanol-blended fuels, with no confirmed evidence of widespread engine failure or breakdown due to ethanol blending.
A major OEM serviced 2.84 crore vehicles in FY2025-26, including ~1.5 crore not originally certified E20-compatible, and reported no ethanol-related corrosion, abnormal wear, or reduced part life.
ARAI, SIAM, IOCL, IIP, and automakers conducted extensive lab and field tests covering parameters like engine robustness, drivability, startability, corrosion resistance, material compatibility, emissions, and fuel efficiency.
Fuel efficiency changes are minor and influenced by driving conditions, habits, and maintenance; some E10-designed vehicles may see a slight decrease, but overall impact is negligible.
Manufacturers continue to honor warranty obligations for vehicles using E20, reinforcing its reliability.
No widespread or confirmed complaints have been received from vehicle manufacturers, automobile associations, or consumer organizations regarding E20 use.
