Background
The Indian Railway Establishment Code (IREC) provides provisions for compulsory retirement of officers in public interest, similar to Rule 56(J) of the Fundamental Rules. Such reviews are periodic and aim to weed out officers with doubtful integrity or inefficiency.

Five Group A officers recommended for premature retirement by Railway Board review committees.
Two officers are from Senior Administrative Grade (SAG), equivalent to Joint Secretary level.
Three officers are from Junior Administrative Grade (JAG), at Director or Joint Director level.

In 2022, railways prematurely retired 32 officers above age 50 on grounds of inefficiency, doubtful integrity, and conduct unbecoming of a public servant.
Of the 32 retired in 2022, 22 were at the level of director and above.
The railway ministry stated that integrity, discipline, and accountability in public service are non-negotiable.
