Why in news

The US has announced new tariffs of 10% and 12.5% on imports from 60 economies, including India, citing forced labour concerns. India qualifies for the lower 10% rate after recent policy changes. The move replaces the temporary 10% global tariff and could impact India's exports to the US.

Background

The US has had a forced labour import ban for nearly a century. Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 allows the US to investigate foreign trade practices and impose tariffs if they unfairly burden US commerce. Previous US administrations have used moral suasion to address forced labour, but the Trump administration now uses tariffs to push trading partners to enforce restrictions.
