Why in news
India launched a scathing attack on Pakistan at the UNSC, highlighting rights suppression in PoK and reaffirming that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India. This counters Pakistan's attempts to raise the Kashmir issue at the UN.
Background
India has consistently maintained that Jammu and Kashmir is its integral part and that Pakistan's occupation of parts of the region is illegal. The UNSC has previously discussed the Kashmir issue, but India now asserts that the only dispute is Pakistan's unlawful occupation.
Key facts
India's UN Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni spoke at the UNSC Open Debate on Peaceful Settlement of Disputes.
He accused Pakistan of continued suppression of basic rights, freedom of expression, and association in PoK.
He stated that the world is witness to the stifling of fundamental freedoms of Kashmiris in PoK for nearly eight decades.
India reaffirmed that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral and inalienable part of India.
The only outstanding issue is Pakistan's naked aggression and illegal occupation of Indian territory.
Parvathaneni also criticized Pakistan's internal repression, including incarceration of a former PM, outlawing of opposition party, and the 27th Amendment constitutional coup.
He urged Pakistan to look inward and address real issues instead of fabricating narratives.
He questioned why similar repression in Pakistan does not receive UN attention compared to other countries.
