India's drug regulator has approved the first dengue vaccine, QDENGA, marking a major step in combating a disease that has surged 11-fold in two decades. The vaccine is expected to hit the market in early 2027 and can be given without pre-screening, unlike earlier options.

Background

Dengue is a vector-borne disease spread by Aedes mosquitoes, with no specific antiviral treatment. India accounts for nearly 34% of the global dengue burden, the highest of any country. Over 1.13 lakh cases were reported in 2025. Previous dengue vaccines required pre-vaccination screening due to risks in seronegative individuals.
