Why in news
India's drug regulator has approved the first dengue vaccine, QDENGA, marking a major step in combating a disease that has surged 11-fold in two decades. The vaccine is expected to hit the market in early 2027 and can be given without pre-screening, unlike earlier options.
Background
Dengue is a vector-borne disease spread by Aedes mosquitoes, with no specific antiviral treatment. India accounts for nearly 34% of the global dengue burden, the highest of any country. Over 1.13 lakh cases were reported in 2025. Previous dengue vaccines required pre-vaccination screening due to risks in seronegative individuals.

QDENGA is a two-dose vaccine (three months apart) for ages 4 to 60 years.
It protects against all four dengue virus serotypes.
No pre-vaccination screening required; can be given regardless of prior dengue infection.
Phase III trial in Indian participants (4-60 years) showed safety, tolerability, and immunogenicity.
WHO prequalified and recommended for dengue-endemic settings without pre-screening.
Approved in 43 countries; over 32 million doses distributed globally.
Launch expected in first half of 2027; pricing not yet finalised.
