106 bags of coins weighing 5663.3 kg seized from his shop and house; Hathras trader on the run

  1. Hathras police registered a case under the Coinage Act 2011 against trader Naveen Samadia after 5663.3 kg of 1, 2, and 5 rupee coins in 106 bags were seized from his shop and house.

  2. The case was filed under Section 12 (prohibition of making or melting or destruction of coins) and Section 13 of The Coinage Act 2011, which provides up to seven years' imprisonment or a fine.

  3. The raid was conducted on August 1 by a team led by nayab tehsildar Shiv Kumar, who filed the FIR; Samadia is on the run.

  4. The coins were stored in 106 plastic bags: 77 bags of 60 kg, 6 bags of 50 kg, 5 bags of 30 kg, 1 bag of 20 kg, and 1 bag of 53.5 kg.

  5. Police officer Satyendra Singh Raghav said the accused was allegedly melting the coins and distributing them; registration was delayed due to lack of Coinage Act data on police computers.
