Spain says most migrants have returned to Morocco after deadly border rush

Spain said most of the more than 50,000 migrants who crossed into Ceuta have returned to Morocco.

Spanish authorities recovered 57 bodies on the Spanish side; some migrants drowned or were crushed trying to climb the breakwater.

Moroccan security forces used batons and tear gas to push back crowds and prevent more crossings.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called the crossing a violation of Spain's territorial sovereignty.

Italy suspended Schengen border-free travel with Spain, which Madrid said breached EU treaties.
