AI helps solve 1939 Jacobian conjecture

An AI model named Fable, developed by Anthropic, helped identify a potential counterexample to the Jacobian conjecture, a mathematical problem first proposed in 1939.

Harvard mathematician Levent Alpöge collaborated with Fable over a single Sunday to search for a counterexample to the conjecture, which has resisted human efforts for decades.

The Jacobian conjecture concerns polynomial transformations and asks whether certain mappings can be reversed by another polynomial mapping, but remains unsolved.
