Dermatologist Dr Praneeta Jain shared the case of an 18-year-old patient with severe dandruff who washed her hair only once every 10 days because she was told washing 'strips' colour-treated hair.
Dr Jain explained that dandruff is caused by a yeast called Malassezia, which overgrows when the scalp is not cleaned regularly, and that bleaching damages hair shafts, not the scalp.
Dr Jain recommended washing hair regularly: females at least twice a week, males daily to alternate days, and using medicated shampoo on the scalp for dandruff.
