34 killed as methane explosion tears through coal mine in Pakistan's Balochistan

A methane gas explosion in a coal mine in Balochistan, Pakistan, killed at least 34 miners and left 10 trapped.

The blast occurred on the outskirts of Quetta, the provincial capital, and was likely caused by a buildup of methane gas, according to government mine inspector Ghani Baloch.

Balochistan's mines and minerals minister Shoaib Nosherwani announced compensation of 500,000 Pakistani rupees (about $1,800) to each deceased miner's family.

The Pakistan Central Mines Labour Federation alleged negligence and urged stricter enforcement of mining safety regulations.

Fatal accidents are common in Pakistan's coal mining industry due to inadequate ventilation, gas monitoring systems, and safety measures, especially in Balochistan.
