Nepal may require 7,000m peak before Everest permit

Nepal lawmakers proposed requiring climbers to summit at least one 7,000m peak in the country before obtaining an Everest permit.

The proposals are part of 263 amendments to Nepal's Integrated Tourism Bill, now being examined by Parliament.

Other amendments include mandatory training, a medical certificate, and auctioning permits from a minimum price of $15,000.

Waste control measures include QR codes on items above base camp, digital recording of equipment, and a zero-waste policy.

The rule could push Everest aspirants towards a few preparatory peaks unless alternatives are developed, said Tashi Lhakpa Sherpa of 14 Peaks Expedition.
