Hungary's President Tamás Sulyok steps down after signing law that ends his term

Hungary's President Tamás Sulyok stepped down after signing a constitutional amendment that ended his term.

The amendment was passed by the ruling Tisza party of Prime Minister Péter Magyar.

The law ended Sulyok's term citing a “serious loss of confidence” in the leader.

Sulyok was elected in 2024 by the government of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

A former constitutional court judge warned the reform harmed the rule of law in Hungary.
