Kyle Shanahan accident update: Police decision and withheld records raise fresh questions about 49ers coach's crash

Kyle Shanahan's iPhone slipped, causing him to take his eyes off the road and collide with another vehicle on July 14.

Palo Alto police acknowledged Shanahan was responsible but chose not to issue a citation, citing officer discretion under California law.

Initial police records incorrectly blamed the other driver and indicated Shanahan violated California's hands-free cellphone law by handling his iPhone.

Police have refused to release the crash report or body-camera footage from the incident.

Shanahan suffered injuries including a fractured nose, deep facial laceration (40 stitches), three broken ribs, a broken left hand, and a concussion.
