The tiny helicopter Nasa built to survive 30 days on Mars ended up flying for nearly three years

NASA's Ingenuity helicopter achieved the first powered, controlled flight on another planet on 19 April 2021.

Ingenuity was designed for a 30-sol technology demonstration but operated for 1,004 sols and completed 72 flights.

The helicopter travelled more than 17 kilometres on Mars and served as a scout for the Perseverance rover.

Its mission ended in early 2024 after far exceeding expectations.
