Artist Betye Saar, whose work reflected Black identity, has died at 99

Betye Saar, whose work reflected Black identity, culture and spirituality, died Sunday morning in Los Angeles at 99.

Saar was a central figure of the 1960s Black Art Movement and pioneered assemblage using found objects.

Her work 'The Liberation of Aunt Jemima' (1972) reclaimed Jim Crow-era memorabilia as a symbol of Black liberation, created as a response to the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.

Saar began her career in design and shifted to art at age 35, continuing to make art into her 90s.

Her artwork 'Black Girl's Window' (1969) was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
