70% water samples near abandoned Union Carbide factory in Bhopal found contaminated

% of drinking water samples near the abandoned Union Carbide factory in Bhopal tested positive for faecal coliform, with 43 of 63 samples contaminated.

Contamination was found in 90% of samples from Upper Lake supply and 25% from Kolar dam supply, according to Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Purush Sangharsh Morcha president Nawab Khan.

Survivors' groups linked the contamination to health issues like diarrhea, vomiting, and typhoid among residents near the abandoned factory.

The Supreme Court in 2004 acknowledged groundwater contamination and ordered piped water; the groups note that even this supply is now contaminated.

Groups demand strict action and time-bound implementation of sewage and drainage plans, as the BMC has not acted on a 2018 Supreme Court directive.
