The outgoing PM's belongings are moved out of the Downing Street flat by removal vans on the day of the transition.

The leader of the Opposition then travels to Buckingham Palace, is asked to form a government, kisses the King's hands, and leaves in the PM's official limousine.

The transition process typically takes about an hour, with the new PM giving a televised address to the nation.
