North Carolina to hold first Elk hunt In 2027 after rebuilding herd over 25 years

North Carolina will hold its first elk hunt in 2027, 25 years after reintroducing the species.
Only two hunting permits will be issued through an auction and raffle, with proceeds supporting elk conservation.
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) will issue the permits under House Bill 747 signed by Governor Josh Stein.
Wildlife officials say the elk population is now sustainable, allowing a limited hunt without harming long-term survival.
One permit will be auctioned through a wildlife conservation non-profit, the other through a raffle.
