Man climbs Brooklyn Bridge, strips naked, plants flags, jumps into East River; survives, identified
Galymzhan Abaildayev, a 44-year-old Brooklyn resident, climbed the north tower of the Brooklyn Bridge on Sunday, removed his clothes, planted several flags including one of Kazakhstan, and jumped into the East River.
He survived the fall from about 278 feet and was rescued by NYPD Harbor Unit officers, then taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.
Abaildayev has been charged with reckless endangerment, making graffiti, public lewdness, criminal trespass, and disorderly conduct; the motive remains under investigation.
