Matheran Hill Railway May Get India’s First Hydrogen-Powered Heritage Train Under Green Initiative

Matheran Hill Railway in Maharashtra may get India's first hydrogen-powered heritage train under Indian Railways' green initiative.

The proposal follows the launch of India's first hydrogen-powered train on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana on Friday.

The non-electrified, eco-sensitive route is ideal for hydrogen tech, which would replace diesel with zero-emission water vapour.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw indicated the heritage train could use electric or hydrogen tech while keeping its historic steam locomotive appearance.

The railway is on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list; the plan is still conceptual with no timeline announced.
