Karnataka's department of school education and literacy introduced the facial recognition app Niranthara to record student attendance.
As of July 20, 72.4% of registered students (2.3 lakh out of 35.2 lakh in govt and aided schools) are actively recording daily attendance via Niranthara.
Niranthara aims to provide accurate daily attendance, identify absentees, and ensure transparency in student-focused programmes like midday meal schemes.
Teachers use the app to photograph a class, and the app identifies students and registers attendance.
The department also uses the KAAMS-Kartavya app for employee attendance, with 81.5% logging attendance on July 23.
