Joe Root set to return as England captain, to lead till Ashes

Joe Root is set to return as England Test captain after Ben Stokes' retirement from international cricket.

Root's second spell as captain is likely to continue through the 2027 home Ashes series against Australia.

The ECB is expected to announce Root as captain for the three-Test series against Pakistan starting August 19.

Harry Brook will continue as England's white-ball captain ahead of the 50-over World Cup.

Assistant coach Marcus Trescothick is expected to take charge as interim Test coach for the Pakistan series.
