'No need to respond in advance': Canadian PM Mark Carney rules out retaliatory tariffs before Aug 19

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney ruled out retaliatory tariffs before August 19, stating responding in advance would be counterproductive.

Carney said Canada is intensifying efforts to strike a comprehensive trade agreement with the United States before the deadline.

US President Donald Trump proposed 50% tariffs on Canadian exports including honey, liquor, cement, dairy, wood products, and hockey sticks, effective August 19.

Carney stated that Canada has not ruled out any measures if the tariffs are imposed, and "everything's on the table" if no agreement is reached.

The tariffs would extend to products previously shielded under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which was not renewed by the US.
