Girl, 11, dies in River Thames accident

Kaliyah Coa, 11, died after entering the River Thames at Barge House Causeway, east London, on March 31, 2025.

Her body was recovered two weeks later at Maritime Quay; an inquest ruled her death accidental from immersion in cold water.

Kaliyah asked her father for permission to 'dip her toes' in the river; he refused and told her to move away from the edge.

Witness Nathan Guy reported Kaliyah was trying to retrieve a lost shoe from the river using her scooter before she struggled and went under.

Coroner Graeme Irvine concluded the cold water caused unconsciousness and death relatively swiftly, with no evidence of hostility among the children.
