Rose Metcalf, a 23-year-old dancer, helped guide about 400 people off the sinking Costa Concordia on her first day at work.

Metcalf organized a human chain with crew members to evacuate passengers after lifeboats became inaccessible.

She signaled a rescue helicopter using her earring as a makeshift light.

The Costa Concordia struck a reef near Giglio Island, Italy, on January 13, 2012, resulting in 32 deaths.

Metcalf was one of 12 fluent English speakers on board and took on the roll call duty for crew members.
