‘Like calling water is wet’: What Gitanjali Angmo, Wangchuk's wife, said on terming India 'secular' in Constitution
Gitanjali Angmo, founder and CEO of Himalayan Institute of Alternatives Ladakh (HIAL) and wife of activist Sonam Wangchuk, said India was 'secular' before 1976, calling the term in the Constitution a 'tautology'.
Angmo wrote on X that the word 'secular' is a Western import from Europe's church-state conflicts and does not capture India's historical religious pluralism, better described by concepts like 'Sarva Dharma Sambhava' or 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam'.
During NEET protests, Angmo questioned the Congress's protest near Prime Minister Narendra Modi's residence, saying leaders should have joined students at Jantar Mantar instead.
Wangchuk ended his indefinite hunger strike over NEET irregularities and returned to Ladakh, receiving treatment at Medanta hospital in Gurugram.
