America weighs worker retraining as AI advances

Kimberly Brady, a 53-year-old Californian, retrained for Costco's optical department after 620 unsuccessful job applications, but was not hired due to lack of hands-on experience.

Goldman Sachs estimates that around 10 million jobs could be displaced over the next decade due to AI, especially entry-level white-collar and routine office work.

Nearly one in five American workers expects AI to eliminate their job within five years, according to a survey.

Between 2000 and 2011, America lost nearly 6 million factory jobs, with about 1 million due to Chinese import competition, and the main federal response, Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA), had limited scope.

Workers who received training through TAA worked roughly three months more and earned about $50,000 more over the following decade compared to those who did not.
