Pirates give bullpen a boost by acquiring Luke Weaver from the Mets

The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired right-hander Luke Weaver from the New York Mets for shortstop prospect Sammy Stafura.

Weaver, 32, has a 1.84 ERA in 42 appearances this season and is in the first year of a $22 million, two-year contract.

The Pirates have blown 20 of 42 save opportunities, prompting the trade to bolster their bullpen.

Pittsburgh also acquired Camilo Doval from the Yankees on Saturday, and Weaver is expected to pitch in high-leverage situations.

Weaver has posted a 2.90 ERA with 13 saves in 168 games since moving to the bullpen in 2024.
