Walkers form human chain at Lalbagh to oppose tunnel road in Bengaluru

Around 50 walkers, environmentalists, and residents formed a human chain at Lalbagh Rock on Sunday to oppose Bengaluru's proposed tunnel road project, organized by Lalbagh Walkers' Association.

Protesters urged the state government to scrap the tunnel road, citing threats to Lalbagh Botanical Garden's ancient geological heritage, biodiversity, and tree cover.

Lalbagh Walkers' Association member BV Sridhar Rao noted that previous governments had shelved a Metro line and multi-level parking proposals after citizen opposition, and urged the current government to listen.

The tunnel road also threatens the Peninsular Gneiss rock formation, estimated to be over 3.3 billion years old, according to the protesters.

Machinery for the tunnel road project has begun work along Siddapura Road pavement outside Lalbagh Botanical Garden.
