EU delegation visit to Lanka mass grave site triggers protest; victims' families demand international probe

A European Union delegation visited Sri Lanka's Chemmani mass grave site in Jaffna district, triggering a protest by victims' families.

Protesters from the Association of Relatives of Enforced Disappearances demanded an international probe into the mass grave.

Human rights lawyer Ranitha Gnanaraja said 467 skeletal remains were recovered during 93 days of excavation, including 13 remains found on Tuesday with three children.

Skeletal remains were first discovered in February 2025 during construction, and excavations under judicial supervision began three months later.

The EU delegation included ambassadors from France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands.
