Irish police find explosive device in car near border with Northern Ireland

Irish police (Garda) found an 'extremely significant' explosive device in a vehicle near the border with Northern Ireland on Wednesday.

Police arrested a woman in her 20s at the scene and later a man in his 40s linked to the investigation.

The device was being transported to Northern Ireland, likely for use as an under-car explosive in an attack, according to broadcaster RTE.

Garda commissioner Justin Kelly confirmed the seizure was linked to dissident republican activity and could have caused significant damage.

Dissident republican groups remain a persistent threat despite the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, with past attacks using improvised explosive devices.
