At least 500 Rohingya feared dead after two boats capsize in Bay of Bengal
Two boats carrying Rohingya people capsized in the Bay of Bengal, leaving at least 500 feared dead.
The boats departed from Myanmar's Rakhine state in late June, carrying mostly Rohingya passengers, including some from refugee camps in Bangladesh.
One boat carrying about 250 people lost contact shortly after departure; a second carrying 280 people is believed to have sunk off Myanmar's Ayeyarwady coast on July 8.
UNHCR and IOM expressed grave concern, noting that recent torrential rain and flooding made the monsoon-season voyage even riskier.
The agencies urged stronger international efforts for search and rescue, asylum access, and action against smuggling networks to prevent further loss of life.
