Scientists find traces of Fiji virus in paddy belt of Haryana

Scientists from Rice Research Station (RRS) in Kaul, Kaithal, detected Southern Rice Black-Streaked Dwarf Virus (Fiji virus) in paddy fields across Kaithal, Karnal, and Kurukshetra districts, with reports from Ambala and Yamunanagar.

The virus can reduce crop yield by up to 80% if not detected promptly, causing dwarfing, erected dark green leaves, and weak brown roots.

The virus has recurred for the third time since 2022, with early-sown non-basmati hybrid and PR varieties most affected.

RRS assistant scientist Sumit Saini noted that the spread is likely due to favorable weather conditions—less intermittent rain and high humidity—which promotes the white-backed planthopper vector.

Karnal deputy director of agriculture Wazir Singh said teams are ready to visit fields upon farmer reports, and some farmers have already destroyed and replanted their paddy.
