Govt mulls PM Surya Ghar 2.0 with battery storage, shared rooftop solar

Government is considering PM Surya Ghar 2.0, a second phase of the rooftop solar scheme PMSG:MBY.

The next phase may include battery storage systems (BESS) to store excess solar power for use after sunset.

Expansion to apartment residents and households without suitable rooftops via group and virtual net metering is proposed.

Stricter maintenance obligations and a guarantee of electricity generation over the system's life are being discussed.

Over 40 lakh installations have been completed, benefiting more than 48 lakh households since the scheme's launch in February 2024.
