Lost for 150 years, this library book finally finds its way home

Kiama Library in Kiama, Australia, recovered a book overdue by nearly 150 years, found hidden in a sealed fireplace during a home renovation.

Resident Ross Simmons discovered the book in a tea crate inside the chimney of his family's old cottage and returned it to Kiama Library.

Simmons believes the book was borrowed by his great-great-grandfather, John Simmons, who lived in the house in the late 19th century.

Library manager Michelle Hudson estimated the overdue fines would total around 28,000 Australian dollars (approx ₹ 19 lakh), based on the original policy of three pence per week.

The book, despite water damage, is historically significant as it highlights the library's Victorian-era rules, including limits on borrowing based on literacy and a ban on intoxicated patrons.
