Six orphaned rhinos give birth after mothers were killed by poachers

Six orphaned rhinos in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal, whose mothers were killed by poachers around 2017, have all given birth naturally in the wild after up to five years of rehabilitation.

The rehabilitation was run by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife's Game Capture and Veterinary Unit, involving rescue, medical care, long-term care, release into protected reserves, and tracking.

Dumisani Zwane, Game Capture and Veterinary Manager at Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, called the births a symbol of hope and a conservation success for rhino populations.

The births strengthen local conservation efforts and contribute to wild rhino numbers amidst ongoing threats from poaching driven by illegal horn trade.
