The Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) deferred a ₹1.76-crore proposal to replace two defunct gas cremators at the Amardham crematorium.
Opposition corporators questioned the cost, saying a single gas cremator costs around ₹30 lakh in the market, while the estimate was ₹1.76 crore for two units.
Congress corporator Latif Shaikh noted a gas cremator installed at Gujarati crematorium in Panvel 1.5 years ago cost ₹28 lakh.
Both gas cremators at Amardham crematorium have been non-functional for a prolonged period due to inadequate maintenance.
The proposal was deferred on the Mayor's directions for further scrutiny after objections by the Opposition.
