US abandoned particle collider tunnel in Texas

The Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) was a planned particle accelerator in Texas, cancelled by the U.S. Congress in 1993 after $2 billion was spent.

The SSC was designed to smash protons at 40 tera-electron volts, using superconducting magnets cooled near absolute zero.

Only 22.5 kilometers of the planned 87-kilometer tunnel were completed before cancellation, with the tunnel remaining hidden beneath Ellis County, Texas.
