Virginia students save family from lake during golf tryouts

Three Eastern View High School students — Andrew Tuggle, 15, Jackson Castro, 17, and Gavin Cain, 17 — rescued a family of three after kayaks overturned on Lake Culpeper on July 27.

During golf tryouts, the teens heard a splash and a child screaming, called 911, alerted coaches, and swam to bring two adults and a 3-year-old boy safely to shore.

The rescue occurred near the Lake Culpeper Dam water intake area with steep, overgrown hillside and boulder-covered edge, but the teens ran through thorny brush and retrieved kayaks afterward.

All family members wore life jackets and were not injured; police and school officials praised the teens for acting without hesitation and at personal risk.
