Bail rejected for man who faked confession of Charlie Kirk killing

Delhi court denied anticipatory bail to Michael Ashish Mukherjee for impersonating his brother-in-law and falsely confessing to the assassination of American political activist Charlie Kirk.

Mukherjee allegedly created fake email accounts impersonating Prateek Paul and sent fabricated confessions to US agencies including the FBI, DOJ, USCIS, and ICE.

The court described the acts as a sophisticated and vindictive cybercrime with international ramifications, citing need for custodial interrogation to recover digital evidence.

The case originated from a matrimonial dispute between Mukherjee and Paul’s sister, who had filed for divorce on grounds of cruelty and adultery.

Mukherjee faces charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Information Technology Act for defamation, cheating by personation, and cyber harassment.
