Consumer panel orders insurer to pay ₹10L accident cover to Mohali couple

The Mohali district consumer commission ordered Shriram General Insurance Company to pay ₹10 lakh group accident cover to Raj Kumar and Kusha, whose son Akshay Kumar died after a road accident.

Akshay was an employee of ICONMA Professional Services and Solutions and covered under its group personal accident insurance policy.

The insurer rejected the claim on November 30, 2022, citing lack of post-mortem and a death certificate listing cardiopulmonary arrest, not accidental injury.

The commission ruled that medical records linking death to the road accident sufficed, and absence of post-mortem alone cannot justify rejection.

The insurer must pay 6% annual interest from the rejection date plus ₹50,000 in compensation and litigation costs.
