Allahabad HC says police stations have become ‘places of commercial activity’

Allahabad high court observed police stations have become 'places of commercial activity' during a hearing on August 2, 2026.
Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal directed Uttar Pradesh DGP to inquire into a police constable's alleged transport business and initiate disciplinary proceedings against all police officials and constables of Rasra police station in Ballia district.
The constable, Santosh Kumar, admitted withdrawing money from his GPF account to start a business with petitioner Harendra Yadav in his brother's name.
The court found the blacklisting of Yadav's truck by ARTO Ballia was based solely on a report by sub-inspector Shiv Murti Tiwari regarding an ownership dispute, with no action taken against the constable.
The DGP must file an affidavit on action taken within 10 days; the next hearing is set for August 11.
