After surviving Hurricane Irma, this 16-year-old created a programme that teaches students what schools didn't

Elise Raurell, a 16-year-old Florida teen, created Storm Smart, a student-led hurricane preparedness programme, as her Girl Scout Gold Award project.

Storm Smart teaches children how to prepare for, stay safe during, and recover after hurricanes through peer-to-peer learning.

The programme includes classroom presentations, printable materials, online resources, and social media content covering emergency kits, safety during storms, and post-storm dangers like flooded roads and downed power lines.

Storm Smart has reached nearly 500 students and aims to expand to more schools across South Florida.
