US sees rise in cyclosporiasis cases

Cyclosporiasis cases are rising across the US, caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, spreading via contaminated food or water.

The CDC reports at least 843 cases across 31 states from May 1 to July 9, 2026, with Florida and Tennessee seeing notable increases.

Florida reported at least 50 cases between May 1 and July 4, including six in the Tampa Bay area.

Tennessee confirmed about 30 cases by early July 2026, up from just one case by the same time in previous years.

Michigan reported over 1,500 cases alone, and some estimates suggest around 3,000 cases nationwide, though the exact cause of the outbreak is unknown.
