Why Indian lawyers wear black coats

The tradition of black robes dates back to 1694 after Queen Mary II of England died; King William III ordered court members to wear black in mourning, and it became the official legal uniform in 1697.

Black symbolizes neutrality, dignity, and equality, ensuring lawyers don't show wealth or status and that all are equal before the law.

The Advocates Act of 1961 made it compulsory for Indian lawyers to wear a black robe and white neckband in court.

The white neckband represents a clean conscience and honesty.
