Convicted, Then Vanished: Pune Man Held 23 Years After Schoolboys Death

Padubidri police arrested Pune-based truck driver Vilas Shinde after he was on the run for 23 years.

Shinde was convicted in a 2002 fatal road accident that killed a schoolboy near Muloor Masjid on NH-66 in Udupi district.

He was sentenced to three months' imprisonment and a Rs 1,000 fine but went into hiding instead of serving the sentence.

Acting on directions from Udupi SP Hariram Shankar, a special police team tracked Shinde to Pune, where he worked as a truck driver.
