Matt Damon reveals what led to 'Good Will Hunting' screenplay

Matt Damon said missing the role of Aaron Stampler in 'Primal Fear' motivated him and Ben Affleck to write 'Good Will Hunting'.

Edward Norton was cast in 'Primal Fear' and gave a phenomenal performance that Damon and Affleck recognized as a rare opportunity for unknown actors.

The disappointment of losing the role spurred the duo to 'really buckle down' and write the script 'a little more desperately'.

Damon and Affleck won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for 'Good Will Hunting' in 1998.
