Senthil Balaji seeks SC relief from arrest after HC rejects pre-arrest bail
DMK MLA and former Tamil Nadu minister V Senthil Balaji filed a Special Leave Petition in the Supreme Court seeking protection from arrest after the Madras High Court rejected his anticipatory bail.
The case involves alleged irregularities in the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC), with the high court citing a loss of over ₹17 crore to the public exchequer and the need for custodial interrogation.
Senior advocates Kapil Sibal and Mukul Rohatgi mentioned the SLP before a bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, which agreed to hear it on July 31.
The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) registered a fresh FIR on July 28 against Balaji and six others, including former TASMAC Managing Director S Visakan, after searches at 41 locations.
The FIR alleges manipulation of tenders for bars and transport contracts, favouring selected bidders, and enabling cartelisation, with the state government claiming the actual loss could exceed ₹100 crore.
