Major US Black university mandates business suits, bans certain headwear in new dress code

Tuskegee University, a historically Black university in Alabama, announced a new dress code requiring students to bring business suits and appropriate shoes for the new semester.

The policy prohibits revealing clothing in classrooms, cafeterias, and official events, and bans bedroom slippers, bonnets, and du-rags in those areas.

The university also banned cellphone use in classrooms and reiterated its mandatory attendance policy.

University president Dr. Mark Brown stated the goal is to prepare students for the workforce, not to restrict the college experience.

The dress code has sparked online debate, with critics calling it 'respectability politics' and supporters saying it reinforces discipline and professionalism.
