Sunken German warship from WWII resurfaces due to low river levels in Serbia

Low water levels in the Danube River in Serbia have exposed German warships scuttled by Nazi forces in autumn 1944 near Prahovo.

The ships were deliberately sunk to block the Danube and prevent equipment from falling into Soviet hands.

The wrecks have been visible for years during droughts, but persistent heat in 2026 has made them more visible.

An EU-backed project under the Western Balkans Investment Framework began salvaging 21 dangerous wrecks in 2024, with operations ongoing until 2028.

Around 200 vessels, including warships and barges, are estimated to lie submerged in the area, affecting a five-kilometre stretch of river navigation.
